PSC English: Active & Passive Voice

Main Points:

1. The object of the action in the Active Voice is made the subject in the Passive Voice.
   

   eg.	He likes oranges (Active Voice) He – subject Likes – verb Oranges – object

   Passive Voice – Oranges are liked by him
2. One of the form of auxiliary verb ‘to be’ (is, am, are, was, were, being, been) is used according to the object and the tense of the main verb in the Active Voice.
   Here – ‘are’
   Oranges are liked by him
3. After the auxiliary, the Past Participle form of the main verb is used.
   Here – ‘liked’
   Oranges are liked by him
4. The preposition ‘by’ is placed before the unit that was the subject of the verb in the active sentence.
   Oranges are liked by him
5. Then the subject of the Active Voice is brought to the place of the object in the Passive Voice.
   Here – ‘him’
   Oranges are liked by him

വിതുന്വി നിൽക്കുന്ന നൊന്വരം പോലെ…
എന്റെ മനസിലൊരു വിങ്ങലായിരിക്കുന്നു

1969 മെയ് 21 ന് വയനാട് ജില്ലയിലെ മടക്കിമലയിൽ ജനിച്ചു
ചാലപ്പുറം ഗവ. ഗണപത് ഹൈസ്കൂൾ, ഗുരുവായൂരപ്പൻ കോളേജ്, ഫാറൂഖ് കോളേജ്, കാലിക്കറ്റ് യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് ഡിപ്പാർട്ട്മെന്റ്, ചെന്നൈ മദർ തെരേസ വിമൻസ് യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം.
വയനാട് മൂട്ടിൽ WMOAS കോളേജിൽ അദ്ധ്യാപികയായിരുന്നു.
1999 ജനുവരി 17 ന് നന്ദിത സ്വയം ജീവിതം അവസാനിപ്പിച്ചു. കാരണം വ്യക്തമല്ല.

“ഒരു സ്ററെതസ്കോപ്പിൻ ഞരന്വിലൂടെ
അന്ത്യചലനവുമെന്നെ വെടിഞ്ഞു പോകുന്വോൾ
നിഴലുകൾ നീലവിരലുകൾ കൊണ്ടെൻ
നിറഞ്ഞൊഴുകുന്ന മിഴികൾ മീട്ടുന്വോൾ
കിനാവ് പോലെ ഞാൻ പൊലിഞ്ഞു പോകുന്വോൾ
വരിക ജീവന്റെ മെഴുകുതിരിയുമായ്
ഒരു തലയോട്ടി നിറയെ വീഞ്ഞുമായ്
ഹരിത ചർമ്മത്തിൻ ഒലിവിലയുമായ്
വരിക നീ
ശവമുറിയിൽ നിന്നും എന്നെ വിളിച്ചുണർത്തുവാൻ…”

മരണത്തിനു ശേഷമാണ് നന്ദിതയുടെ കവിതകൾ കണ്ടുകിട്ടുന്നത്
ആമുഖത്തിൽ നിന്നും…
സ്നേഹത്തിനുവേണ്ടി ഉഴറുകയും ലഭിക്കാതെ വന്നപ്പോൾ തന്നോട് തന്നെ പ്രതികാരം വീട്ടുകയും വഴികളെല്ലാം അടഞ്ഞു പോയി എന്നു തോന്നിയപ്പോൾ ഈ ലോകം വിട്ടുപോകുകയും ചെയ്ത നന്ദിത, സ്വന്തം ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ബാക്കിപത്രമായി കുറിച്ചുവെച്ച കവിതകളെല്ലാം രഹസ്യമാക്കിവെച്ചു. വീട്ടിലുള്ളവർ പോലും ഇക്കാര്യം അറിയുന്നത് നന്ദിത ഇവിടം വിട്ടു പോയതിനു ശേഷമാണ്.

“കാമുകൻമാരും കവികളും നിദ്രയായ്
ശ്യാമവനാന്തരം നിശ്ശബ്ദ ഗീതമായ്
എന്നുള്ളലിഞ്ഞു പുറത്തേക്കൊഴുകിയെൻ
കണ്ണുകൾ നീറിയുറഞ്ഞു, വന്നില്ല നീ
കൂരിരുട്ടെത്തി, നീ വന്നില്ല, പൂമര
പൊത്തിലീ രാവുമുറങ്ങി, വന്നില്ല നീ…”

അന്നു കിടക്കാൻ പോകുന്നതിനു മുന്വ് അമ്മയോട് നന്ദിത പറഞ്ഞു – “അമ്മേ, ഒരു ഫോൺ വരും, ഞാൻ തന്നെ അറ്റൻഡ് ചെയ്തോളാം” ആ ഫോൺ കോൾ വന്നതായി വീട്ടിലാരും കേട്ടിരുന്നില്ല. അർദ്ധരാത്രി എന്തിനോ വേണ്ടി അമ്മ ഡ്രോയിംഗ് റൂമിലേക്ക് വന്നപ്പൊൾ മുകളിലെ മുറിക്ക് ചേർന്നുള്ള ടെറസിൽ…
അവൾ പോയ് കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു…

“എനിക്കും നിനക്കുമിടയിൽ
അനന്തമായ അകലം
ഇപ്പോൾ ഞാൻ മനസ്സിലാക്കുകയാണ്
നിന്നെ മറക്കുകയെന്നാൽ മൃതിയാണെന്ന്
ഞാൻ നീ മാത്രമാണെന്ന്”

സ്നേഹത്തെക്കുറിച്ചു, ദിവ്യമായ പ്രണയത്തെക്കുറിച്ചു എന്നും വേദനിച്ചിരുന്നു അവൾ. തന്റെ ജന്മദിനം തന്നെ അസ്വസ്ഥയാക്കുന്നതായി ഒരു കവിതയിൽ അവൾ പറയുന്നു.

“കൂട്ടുകാരൊരുക്കിയ പൂചെണ്ടുകൾക്കും
അനിയന്റെ ആശംസകൾക്കും
അമ്മ വിളന്വിയ പാൽപായസത്തിനുമിടയ്ക്ക്
ഞാൻ തിരഞ്ഞത്
നിന്റെ തൂലികയ്ക്കു വേണ്ടിയായിരുന്നു
നീ വലിച്ചെറിഞ്ഞ നിന്റെ തൂലിക
ഒടുവിൽ പഴയ പുസ്തകക്കെട്ടുകൾക്കിടയ്ക്കു നിന്നും
ഞാനാ തൂലിക കണ്ടെടുത്തപ്പോൾ
അതിന്റെ തുന്വിലെ അഗ്നി
കെട്ടുപോയിരുന്നു!”

പ്രത്യാശയില്ലാത്തൊരു സ്നേഹമുണ്ടോ? വീണ്ടും പ്രത്യാശയുടെ നാന്വുകൾ നീണ്ടുവന്നു. 1991 ൽ ഒരു ദിവസം നന്ദിതയെഴുതി

“നിശ്ശബ്ദം പാടുന്ന
മിന്നാമിനുങ്ങുകളുമെത്തുന്നു
തെച്ചിക്കാടുകൾ തളിർക്കുന്നു
മന്ദാരമുണരുന്നു
നീയിനിയുമെത്താത്തതെന്തേ?
എന്റെ ഗുൽമോഹർ പൂക്കാതെ കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നു
നീയിനിയുമെത്താത്തതെന്തേ?”

സ്നേഹിക്കാനും സ്നേഹിക്കപ്പെടാനുമുള്ള തീവ്രമായ അഭിനിവേശം. എന്നാൽ ഒരിക്കലും അവൾക്കത് ലഭിക്കുന്നില്ലായെന്ന വിധിയുടെ ക്രൂരമായ വിനോദം. ഇങ്ങനെ ഞെരിക്കപ്പെട്ടുപോയ അവളുടെ ഹൃദയം മരണത്തിൽ ആശ്വാസം തേടാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചു.

“കൺപീലികളിൽ കുരുങ്ങിയ സാന്ത്വനം
സ്വപ്നമായ് ഒരിറ്റ് നനവായ്
ഓർമ്മകളിൽ ഓടക്കുഴലിന്റെ വേദനയായ് പുളയുന്നു
കുരുക്കിലെന്റെ ഹൃദയം പിടയുന്നു നിശ്ചലം
ദൈവമേ നിന്നോട് ഞാൻ യാത്ര പറയുന്നു
മഴയായ്, മുകിലായ്, നിരാവിയായ് തിരിച്ചുപോകൂ”

ആത്മാവിൽ ആഴത്തിൽ പതിഞ്ഞ മൃത്യുകാമനയിൽ നിന്നും ഭൂമിയിലെ ജീവിതത്തെ പ്രതീക്ഷാ നിർഭരമായി നോക്കികാണുവാൻ അവൾ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. സ്നേഹിക്കുന്നയാളെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള അരുമയായ അനുഭൂതികൾ ഇടയ്ക്കെങ്കിലും അവളുടെ മനസിനെ പ്രണയാതുരമാക്കുന്നു.

“നാമിനി കടലിലൊഴുകുന്ന രണ്ടു നക്ഷത്രങ്ങൾ
കിഴക്കു തുടിക്കുന്ന പുലർകാല നക്ഷത്രം നീ
പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ ചുവപ്പിൽ തിളങ്ങുന്ന താരകം ഞാനും
നമുക്കിടയിൽ ആയിരം ജന്മങ്ങൾ
മാനം ഭൂമി
പിന്നെ നമ്മെ ബന്ധിക്കുന്ന സൂര്യനും”

സ്വപ്നങ്ങൾ മാഞ്ഞുപോകുന്വോൾ നിരാശയുടെ ഗർത്തത്തിലേക്കു വീണുപോകുന്ന നന്ദിത മരണവുമായി സമന്വയഭാവത്തിലെത്തിയ സൂചനയുണ്ട്. നിറഞ്ഞ സംതൃപ്തിയോടെ അവൾ പറയുന്നു

“എന്റെ ഈശ്വരന്റെ
ചുവന്ന പാദങ്ങളിലെ രക്തമായ്
അലിഞ്ഞു ചേരാൻ
ഗംഗോത്രിയിൽ ഇനി
ആത്മാവിന്റെ തപസ്”

അനുബന്ധത്തിൽ സുഗതകുമാരി ടീച്ചർ പറയുന്നു…

“ചില ജന്മങ്ങളുണ്ട് – പൂമൊട്ട് പോലെ വിടർന്നു വരുന്നു. അഴക് ചൊരിയുന്നു, മണം വീശിത്തുടങ്ങുന്നു, പെട്ടെന്നു സ്വയം പിച്ചിയെറിയുന്നു. വെറും മണ്ണിലേക്ക്, കാരണമെന്താണന്നറിയില്ല. ആർക്കുമത് ഗണിച്ചെടുക്കാനാവില്ല.”

നന്ദിതയും അങ്ങനെ ഓടിച്ചെന്നു മരണത്തിന്റെ കൈ പിടിച്ചവളാണ്. രാജലക്ഷ്മിയെപ്പോലെ, സിൽവിയ പ്ളാത്തിനെപ്പോലെ, എമിലി ഡിക്കിൻസണെപോലെ…

ഒരു മെലിഞ്ഞ കൈയും അവളുടെ കൈ പിടിച്ചു തടയാനുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. അരുതെയെന്നു പറയുവാൻ ദുർബലമായൊരു ശബ്ദം പോലുമുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. മുഖമില്ലാത്ത ഒരു ഏകാന്തത മാത്രം അവൾക്ക് പിന്നിൽ കൂട്ടുനിന്നു. ആ നിഴലിന്റെ കരം പിടിച്ചു അവൾ ഇറങ്ങിപ്പോകുകയും ചെയ്തു.

“എന്നെ തളർത്തുന്ന നിന്റെ കണ്ണുകളുയർത്തി
ഇങ്ങനെ നോക്കാതിരിക്കൂ…
നിന്നെത്തേടിയൊരു ജ്വലിക്കുന്ന അശ്വമെത്തുമെന്ന്
ഇരുളിനപ്പുറത്ത് നിന്നെത്തുന്ന കുളമ്പൊച്ചയും,
കിഴക്ക് പടരുന്ന അഗ്നിയുമെന്നോട് പറയുന്നു.
സാഗരത്തിന്റെ അനന്തതയിൽ പൂക്കുന്ന
സ്വപ്നങ്ങൾ അറുത്തെടുത്ത്
ഞാനിനി തിരിച്ചു പോകട്ടെ”

WhatsApp soon to have voice calling, screenshots leaked

WhatsApp is a fantastically popular way to send messages to other Smartphone users, no matter what platform they’re on – so popular, in fact, that Facebook saw fit to throw $19 billion at the company in an effort to acquire it earlier this year. And while WhatsApp may do text messaging quite well, sometimes we crave the sort of communication you only get when speaking directly to a person. Voice call support has been expected to come to the app for a while now, with early hints popping up months back, but now it looks like the pieces might finally be falling into place, as the latest Android WhatsApp release reveals just such a voice call framework.

Now, a Netherlands based Android focused website, androidworld.nl has published alleged screenshots of a build of the WhatsApp that offers calling features. Perhaps the build is being used by testers or employees and the features will be included in the official build when it's finally announced. The alleged screenshots show what could be the future calling features of WhatsApp.

The update could still be in beta version so it's not released on the Google Play Store. There seems to be separate screens for call logs and ongoing calls and dialing a voice call. We're not sure if these images are legit but we don't doubt that there is a beta build somewhere. The only question now is when the official version would roll out. It’s difficult to verify the authenticity of the screenshots and WhatsApp has not confirmed that it's testing it via beta builds. According to WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum, the delay in rolling out voice calling feature was due to technical hurdles that developers were facing. He had said that the service had been delayed till Q1 2015, speaking at an industry conference in October.

The voice calling feature will bring WhatsApp in direct clash with apps like WeChat, Viber and Line that already allow users to make calls and send messages. It is unclear whether WhatsApp plans to offer voice calls as a premium feature. WhatsApp rivals, such as Viber, Skype and Line already offer voice calling as a free feature, so it makes sense for WhatsApp to release the new feature for free.
